In carnival terms, a blowoff act is an optional encore that audiences pay extra to see. Often salacious or scandalous, the blowoff promises a glimpse at something too shocking for even the normal sideshow fare. If they aren't brave enough to risk a peek, patrons can instead “blow off” and leave.

 

In "The Blowoff," a professional sword-swallower, part of an all-female carnival troupe, finds her curiosity—and suspicions—roused when her boss introduces a mysterious new act that the other performers are forbidden to see.
