At the turn of the twentieth century, tall tales of monstrous entities known as "fearsome critters" were shared among logging camps throughout the Great Lakes Region of North America. Part of a rich oral tradition, these stories entertained, frightened, and amused lumberjacks throughout the long, cold winter months. Many such creatures, despite having ridiculous sounding appearances, could be truly terrifying in nature.

In "Pop Goes the Wasset," a newly appointed police chief in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula learns of one such creature, and discovers to her horror that some truths are stranger than fiction.
