Movie Review: COHERENCE

Just finished watching “Coherence,” a surprisingly good sci-fi thriller from 2018 starring Emily Boldoni (wife of Justin Boldoni, who is currently embroiled in a very public tit-for-tat lawsuit with Blake Lively). In it, she plays Em, a young woman who attends a casual get-together with friends on the night a famous comet is to pass through Earth’s atmosphere. The occurrence is portended to cause all kinds of potential electromagnetic disturbances, so it’s not entirely surprising to Em and the gang when they find they have no cell phone service, or when the power goes out in the entire neighborhood. That is, except for one house visible in the distance, still fully illuminated, and which they surmise must have a generator.

When a group of them decides to hike over to this house to see if they also have phone service, the story takes a slow-moving but steady turn toward the surreal and sinister. Is the comet bringing parallel worlds together in a collision course toward multiverse destruction? And if so, how can Em and her friends determine which reality is, in fact, REAL? With minimal special effects, wonderful character development, and a strong cast led by the capable and empathetic Boldoni, “Coherence” leads viewers along for the ride as Em struggles to solve this astrophysical mystery. In a scenario filled with millions of possible variations of yourself, which one is truly you? And which one do you really want to be?

“Coherence” is available now on Amazon Prime. It’s cerebral, suspenseful, and highly recommended.
