My short story, "Jenny's Room," explores the tradition of mail-order brides that was popular (and helped populate the American Great Plains) in the years following the Civil War. In 1888, young Clara Heyburn leaves her life in Kansas City behind and heads for the prairie to marry a Emmett Beard, a widowed farmer she met through a newspaper advertisement. At first, she's smitten with her handsome new husband, but she can't help but wonder what he's keeping locked away in an upstairs bedroom that once belonged to his dead wife. Especially since Clara keeps hearing sounds coming from beyond the door...
